Freaks
Perverts & Weirdos
My
sister and I were talking the other day about her new co-workers
"concern" about the freaks, perverts, and weirdos
on the big, bad, scary internet. They acted like she was taking
her life into her own hands by even THINKING of meeting someone
she had met online.
When
I first told my co-workers how I met my guy, one of them in
particular as shocked. "How could you meet someone from
the internet?! Weren't you worried that he was some kind of
freak?!" The funniest part was that we work for a local
internet service provider. You'd think that someone who is
online constantly, and makes his living on these "weirdos
on the internet" wouldn't think of internet users as
some other species.
Here's
the deal:
These
exact same freaks, perverts, and weirdos are out there in
REAL LIFE, too. Muffin
Ass might be in line behind you at the grocery store.
Nice
Friendly Perv could be that guy buying you a drink at
the bar. You just don't know. At least on the internet, you
a get a bit of a chance to sort through them and weed out
the wackos before you meet them. And a lot of them show their
personality in the first e-mail.
I'm
actually THANKFUL that Fluid
Master wrote to me, rather than bumping into him in person
somewhere! In his first e-mail, he's brash enough to talk
about all the gross things he'd want to do to me, but I doubt
he'd say in person, "Hi, I'm Max. I want to stick my
cock in your ass, then skull fuck you." It might take
a couple of dates before his perversity showed. Personally,
I'd rather know up front what kind of guy I'm dealing with!
The
weirdos on the internet are NOT some colony of lepers on a
secluded, distant island. They're among us. They're the same
people with whom we interact on a daily basis. Hey... YOU'RE
one of those "people online." There's no need to
be any more fearful of the people you meet online than the
people you meet everyday.
Use
good judgement and trust your instincts. Can a weirdo still
slip through the cracks? Sure. Just like they can in real
life. Some people lie. But it would be foolish to blame the
internet for these liars. That would be like blaming Ticketmaster
if you bought went to a concert and it sucked. This is only
a different avenue for meeting people.
Use
the additional "filtering" features meeting online
offers you. Run a background check if you have to. Get to
know their friends, and let your friends get to know them.
If someone's behavior hasn't tossed up any warning signs after
a couple of weeks... go ahead and meet!
By
the way, my co-worker who swore he'd never turn to the internet
for dates recently placed his first ad. The times, they are
a-changin'!
